Dr. Michele McCoy, Head of School at Chesterton Academy of St. Finbar

Dr. Michele McCoy - MA, JD
Head of School / Philosophy & Advanced Latin

We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Michele McCollum McCoy leading our students as CASF inaugural Head of School, as well as our Advanced Latin teacher and Philosophy teacher. As she notes, beyond faith, family, and community, she has two unyielding passions: children and education. She has an academic career that spans almost three decades, but this love of education arose through her primary profession as an attorney. What started as a foray into teaching an undergraduate law course has blossomed into a full passion for academics - something that has come naturally to Michele.

It was through these 29 years of educating graduate and undergraduate students that she realized many of the US primary and secondary education systems have concerning issues and, in some areas like critical thinking and writing, glaring deficiencies. It was this growing realization that ignited both a passion to work with her students to improve in these areas and, later on, to homeschool her own 4 children.

Her teaching career has expanded in the Charleston community in the subjects of Latin, composition, literature, and U.S. Government. Having a background in Classical Studies (B.A. from USC), Religion and Theology (M.Th. from Loyola University), and American Jurisprudence (J.D. from the University of Denver), she brings the perfect mix of academic rigor, classical training and knowledge to lead our students.

Dr. McCoy is eager to begin working with many more of Charleston’s high school students in their endeavors to seek the good, the true, and the beautiful through the lens of a rigorous classical education. Excelsior!

Following her tenure at Aquinas, Ms. Willoughby served as Director of Adult Faith Formation at a large parish in Charlotte, North Carolina. In this role, she led sacramental preparation efforts and facilitated ongoing faith formation programs for adult parishioners.
